Spanish Wells is one of the nineteen districts of the Bahamas. And it is a short water taxi ride from North Eleuthera. The population was 1,224 at the 2010 census.
Spanish Wells is known for its fishing industry and its lighthouse. The residents are very hardworking and were never slave owners. Many of them can claim to be direct descendants of the Loyalist pioneers, and for many years they have made their living from the bounty in the miles of the sea surrounding the island. In fact, this little community provides 75% of all the crawfish caught in The Bahamas throughout the season. They also make excellent fishing guides and diving instructors. Those who are not employed in the fishing industry are involved in farming.
